Additional Notes This isolated rowan is the sole survivor of woodland once more widespread and diverse at the highest elevations close to the sources of the Swale. Whereas recent woodland was probably confined to the comparative shelter of the steep sided gills, tree remains in peat show that during prehistoric time woodland extended across upland that is now open and treeless moor to the highest ground above 600m. Tree species preserved below peat identified to date include pine, birch and willow. Where sheep have been removed from Shunner Fell in an attempt to preserve the arctic alpine flora, self seeded trees are beginning to re-colonise.
